Twelve

I slip on a billowy yellow dress that skirts just above my knees. When I reach for panties to put on, all of mine seem to have been misplaced, including my swim bottoms. Ken doesn’t seem bothered by the fact that I’ll have to go outside knowing he made a mess of me between my legs. In fact, I think the jerk gets off a little on it.

Ken doesn’t have the faintest idea where my panties are when I ask him about it. I don’t need a lie detector to know that is a lie. Not even knowing I have to go outside and make nice with his sister will make a pair appear. His dirty, teasing playfulness only endears me further to him. Without the stress of his sister outside, if he asked me to marry him right now, I’d be inclined to say yes.

His sister is waiting on the patio with a full glass of wine and a bottle on the table before her.

“I’m going to need to finish this entire bottle to scrub the image of you two from my mind. If you want a drink, get your own.” Apple waves her full glass at us.

Ken snorts and kisses the back of my head before he turns back inside to get us a bottle.

“So, Apple,” I start, sitting down beside her. She’s facing the beach but she turns her head toward me. She has on giant sunglasses that dwarf her face.

“So, homewrecker.” She takes another long sip of her wine.

“I tend to prefer Ainsley, if it makes any sort of difference to you.”

“Can I be frank with you?” Apple asks, peering down her nose at me.

“Seems a little weird, but Frank is a better name than Apple, so sure.”

Apple rolls her eyes, frustration seeping out of her pores. “They were married for eight years, dated for two before that. They were great together. Leslie was perfect for him. She loved my kids and my brother. What do you have to offer? Great tits and spread legs?”

“Wow, you’re a real bitch. It’s no wonder your brother stayed in his marriage as long as he did. Leslie was already immune to your charm; any other woman would have run screaming.”

“And you’re not running?”

“Contrary to what you might think, I’m not a homewrecker, so no, your petty eighth-grade jabs are hardly going to bring me to my knees. I know five-year-olds meaner than you. So if you have more, bring it on, but I’m here to stay.”

I reach over and take her glass and drain it before putting it back in her hand. She tilts her chin down so she can look at me over the top of her glasses and I can’t tell if she’s irritated or impressed.

The words were out of my mouth before I could really examine them. I effectively staked my claim to her brother, telling her that I’m here to stay. My heart knows what it wants before my mind can make itself up.
